Mick, a widowed gravedigger, clears burial plots every autumn through various cemetery tricks on behalf of the diocese. This eerie yet necessary work becomes oppressive when Mairtin – the hamster roaster, idiot and layabout – brings the news that this time they have to dig up the section where Mick’s wife, who died in a car accident seven and a half years ago, was also buried. According to malicious rumours, it was not simply a case of drunk driving, but nobody cares whether these accusations are true or not. The ostracised individual is cast out by the community, and this is Mick’s tragedy. But what really happened to Oona? What is Thomas, a specialist in going too far, hinting at? What does the tough-boned Maryjohnny want to hear? And who took the rose medallion?

Martin McDonagh’s black comedy Skull in Connemara explores human frailty, tragedies and secrets through a distinctive sense of humour. Its deceptive dramaturgy keeps the audience on their toes while revealing universal truths about lives, relationships and unforgivable mistakes. Or does it?
