MAFESZT Begins Next Week

Between 22-26 January, the second edition of the annual festival of Hungarian Theatre Union (HTU) will take place in Oradea, hosted by Szigligeti Theatre. The union of Hungarian theatres from Transylvania was founded in 2017.

During the five days of the festival, the six member theatres of the association - Tomcsa Sándor Theatre Odorheiu Secuiesc, Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre Timisoara, Harag György Company from Satu Mare, Aradi Kamaraszínház, Csíki Játékszín and this year’s host, Szigligeti Theatre - will take the stage.

Besides the 14 shows - including comedies, contemporary drama, musical, children’s shows, dance performances, stage readings and more -, the stage tech workshop of HTU will also take place, along with a creative workshop for artists, led by acclaimed Serbian stage director Kokan Mladenovic.

The first big stage performance, the musical comedy Cactus Flower by Csíki Játékszín will take place on 22 January. Before the start of the show, this year’s Hungarian Culture Awards Ceremony will take place. On 23 January, at 7 pm, Tomcsa Sándor Theatre from Odorhei will play an adaptation of the film The Boss of It All by world famous Danish director Lars von Trier. The next big stage performance will be the latest Timisoara work of one of the most significant Romanian directors, Radu Afrim. “Rabenthal” will play on the 25th, at 7 pm. The last one in the series of big stage shows in the festival will be Oliver! by Szigligeti Company. The performance will take place on 26 January, at 5 pm.

The festival also includes five studio performances: on 22 January, at 5 pm, The Unknown by Nagyvárad Ensemble, on 23 January at 5 pm, Ham Minuet by Aradi Kamaraszínház and Jókai Színház Békéscsaba, on the 24t at 5 pm, Platonov by Szigligeti Company, on 25 January, Harag György Company with Fifteen Attempts at Acting, whereas on 26 January at 8 pm, the show Burundanga will take place.

The program includes three children’s shows as well: on 22 January at 11 am, Csipike the Mean Gnome, on the 24th at 10 am, Rengeteg Ábel and Kürtős Kata, and on 26 January at 11 am, Andersen’s classic, The Snow Queen will be played on the stage of Arcadia Theatre.ű
