Rehearsals have begun for Chehov’s The Cherry at the Szigligeti Theatre

On 12 January 2026, rehearsals for Anton Pavlovich Chehov’s classic play The Cherry began with a read-through at the Szigligeti Theatre in Oradea. The production is directed by Tóth Tünde, based on the translation by György Spiró and Árpád Tóth.

The Cherry is a drama marking the end of an era: it portrays the slow and irreversible disappearance of a world, while something new is already in the process of being born. The characters represent different ages, social backgrounds and worldviews, and it is precisely these differing perspectives that lead them into inevitable conflict.

The directorial concept places strong emphasis on the historical and philosophical layers of the work, which shape the atmosphere of the performance: beneath the apparent lightness lies the pain of passing time, indecision and missed opportunities. The rehearsal process of The Cherry promises a production that is not only a reinterpretation of a classic text, but also a sensitive mirror of the difficulty of letting go of the past, the fear of change, and the moment when a world comes to a definitive close.
