Nino Haratischwili

Famous yet full of mystery, Penthesilea is the queen of the Amazons — one of the few warriors who
managed to stand up to the invincible Achilles in the Trojan War. Part of the fate of the war lies in her
hands.
With 43 victories and only one defeat — suffered when she tried to save her sister, Antiope, who had fled
with the hero Theseus and married him, breaking her vow to the Amazon people — Penthesilea now faces a
new dilemma. This time, she risks repeating her sister’s mistake, falling in love with her greatest enemy.
This story of impossible love has been told over time by Homer, Heinrich von Kleist, and, in contemporary
times, by the Georgian writer Nino Haratischwili. In her modern version, the playwright explores essential
themes of the Greek myth — heroism, the art of war, civilization, and human destiny — and rewrites the
ending of the story in an unexpected and haunting way.
