Lola Blau

Radu Stanca National Theatre, Sibiu

A performance with four different stage versions, performed in Romanian, German, English, and Hungarian.
One performance: four different experiences.

“Lola Blau, actress, woman, lover, sings her life in a confessional musical about meaning, fulfillment, and the relentless search for oneself.

Through a production that embraces linguistic polyphony—the actress Emőke Boldizsár speaks fluently in all four languages in which the performance is presented: Romanian, Hungarian, German, and English—Lola Blau stops time, takes us by the hand, and gently guides us, with irony, humor, and pain, through the portals of the female self and ego: the woman who loves, the woman who leaves, the woman who hides, the woman who loses herself, the woman who dreams, the woman who reinvents herself, the woman who dares, and the woman who never gives up on courage, hope, and, above all, the belief that beyond the often overwhelming and difficult present, there is always a time of rediscovery, love, tranquility, and peace.

Her emigration—from one country to another, from one culture to another, from one identity to another—is our emigration. Her fear of the unknown is our fear. Her loneliness is our loneliness. Her insecurities hurt us with the same heart. Her compromises are transgenerational. Her ambitions collide with the same doors, the same walls that we, too, have encountered along the way. Her dreams, sometimes so fragile, are our dreams, written into a score of tireless hope.”
