The Birth of a Dictator

Every dictator is, in some way, a clown. He performs a parody of democracy and a well-functioning society. At the same time, he embodies the traits of a ridiculous little man and those of a madman who poses a danger to society. And every dictator lulls his followers to sleep with a bedtime story—a story in which he is the hero who repeatedly saves his people from the evil dragon.

The Birth of a Dictator is a simple story about a creator who gradually comes to understand how the world works and recognizes his own role within it. In Ernő Galló’s remarkable performance, we see both the anxious little man searching for his place in the world and the seed of a terrifying tyrant, who slowly draws us into a very dark fairy tale. It is up to us whether we choose to follow him.
