Novella Adaptation

In this dance-theatre adaptation of Géza Csáth’s short story of the same title, fragments from the penultimate moments of a magician’s life unfold. On the threshold of death, he desperately attempts to use spells and the power of magic to delay the inevitable. In this strange transitional space, figures from his life appear one after another: former lovers, his grandmother, his long-deceased mother, and finally his true love, who also comes to bid him farewell. The strands of a funeral proceeding in reverse unfold through a sacred ritual, even as the magician has not yet died. On the border between memory and imagination, a grotesque world takes shape, where events steeped in the atmosphere of magical realism are accompanied and shaped by a pianist’s composition. In this way, the performance becomes a personal testament: a confession about art, love, and mortality.
