Victoria and Her Hussar
operetta
Translated by::
The marching company sets out for the front. Dust swirls through the streets of a small Hungarian market town.
“I will wait for you, László!” cries Viktória. “I will never belong to another man!”
László whispers the name of the woman he loves into the thunderous storm of battle as he charges the cannons with his bayonet. He is captured by the Red soldiers. Sentenced to death. He escapes. Crossing half of Siberia, he finally reaches Peking. And suddenly — what is this, a nightmare? — he sees Viktória in a passing automobile, seated beside an elegant man...
No, it’s no dream: Viktória has indeed married the American ambassador to Peking.
But how can this be? After all, we are in the dazzling world of operetta — not out there, in the goose-bumped, unpleasant reality. Here, lovers are meant to stay faithful to one another and, after many adventures, to be reunited in the end.
Good heavens! How will this story ever find its happy ending?
