William Shakespeare

Othello, the Moor of Venice

tragedy in 2 parts

Translated by:: László Kardos

Othello is the immortal tragedy of betrayed trust and noble innocence ensnared by deceit. The villainous Iago can drive the dark-skinned general into deadly jealousy because Othello sees Desdemona’s love as the very guarantee of his faith in the world and human purity. That is why her loyalty meant more to him than anything. It is no coincidence that this extraordinary work by William Shakespeare (1564–1616) appeared on the Hungarian stage as early as 1794 (in Kolozsvár!) and has since continued to challenge generations of actors and actresses in performing its three monumental roles. The character of Othello last stepped onto the Hungarian stage in Nagyvárad in 1918, and it is worth noting that the company had been considering a new production for more than two decades. It is now coming to fruition.
