The Beauty queen of Leenane

comedy

Translated by:: Upor László

Maureen wanders the streets of a small Irish town. She is a woman in her late thirties, carrying loneliness in her right hand and shopping bags in her left—filled with Vitalin, porridge, and household biscuits. Maureen climbs a steep, rocky, muddy hill to feed her mother porridge, Vitalin, and biscuits. The mother keeps repeating: “I want ladyfingers.” “I want a man,” her daughter snaps back.

The Beauty queen of Leenane is a darkly humorous drama that explores the mother-daughter relationship to examine themes of longing for love, manipulation, suppressed violence, and hopelessness. What impact can emotional abuse and isolation within a family have on human existence and the soul?

The performance contrasts and “meets” the past with the present, searching for answers to what we can bring alive from the past and memory, and what possibilities today’s Hungarian community has to organically integrate the theater into their everyday lives.
