Paul Foster

Elizabeth I

drama

Translated by:: Szabolcs Várady

Paul Foster's play is one of the most unique dramas of the past century, a significant experiment both in offering a different approach to history and in developing a distinct stage language.

Elizabeth I is a play of many layers. On the one hand, instead of a celebratory, heroic, romantic approach to history (which has become a global phenomenon through blockbuster films), it aims to present significant historical figures in a way that resonates with the feelings and thoughts of modern audiences. Instead of spectacular historical tableaux and lavish sets, it conjures on stage the unimaginable, such as the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre or the defeat of the Spanish Armada, through simple means and the actors' presence, in a manner perhaps not attempted since Shakespeare's time.
