Robert Thomas
Trap for a Lonely Man
A crime comedy in two acts
Translated by:: Ottó Szombati Gille
"Perhaps what sets Robert Thomas' crime play apart from the usual pieces of the genre is that its tense atmosphere is frequently lightened by sizzling French humor." (Ottó Szombati Gille, director)
The playwright first entered the theatre world as an actor and never abandoned this profession, even after his plays brought him worldwide fame. Works such as Eight Women and Trap for a Lonely Man are constantly performed on stages around the world.
The Hungarian title Egérfogó a nászágyban was given by the translator and director, but the original title of the play is Double Jeu (Double Game). This title refers to the fact that the main male character appears in a dual role, which creates the suspense and complexity of the plot. Richard and Michel are two distinct characters played by the same actor (in this case, Vilmos Varga), who alternates between portraying the husband and a clumsy criminal. The series of misunderstandings creates numerous situations where the audience believes they have discovered the truth, only for the story to take another turn, leading toward an unexpected conclusion.
