Csongor and Tünde by Mihály Vörösmarty (1800–1855) is one of the most outstanding, epochal works of universal Hungarian drama literature. This fairy tale drama marks a turning point in our literary history: imagination begins to move toward reality, romanticism toward realism. Its extraordinary richness of thought and immeasurable treasury of symbols are what captivated the imagination of one of contemporary Hungarian literature’s prominent figures, and also Görgey Gábor’s mind. Drawing on this and other works by Vörösmarty, he created a paraphrase; this new piece speaks to the people of today, offering the present a possible interpretation of the classical creation, set to music by Illés Lajos, who in his own time was a trailblazer in Hungarian beat music.
