125 years ago was born Ábel’s, Ice-Breaker Mátyás’s and Radiant Jeromos’s creator — Áron Tamási, the “most Székely” of Hungarian writers, whose profoundly local voice became a universal one, leaving behind a cultural legacy that belongs to all Hungarians.

The Szigligeti Company brings The Deceptive Rainbow (Csalóka szivárvány) to the stage not only in honor of the anniversary year, but also because the Oradea audience has not encountered Tamási Áron’s exceptional dramatic talent and powerful language on stage for more than two decades.

The play’s protagonist, Bálint Czintos, is a middle-aged widower and village nobleman who no longer feels at home in the world or in his own skin. His son’s graduation, a secret love, the return of an old friend, and an unexpected incident stir up his life and push him toward a radical decision: he resolves to change his life completely. In a surprising, almost fantastical turn, he attempts to exchange lives.

The question Tamási poses is timeless: is self-identity the highest state we can achieve? Can we truly become someone else — better, greater — without losing our essential selves?
