“As beautiful as a morning dream” – in this delicate sentence, Mikszáth Kálmán, a great contemporary of Jókai Mór (1825–1904), summed up his view of The Man with the Golden Touch, clearly pointing to its poetic nature. Mikszáth continues, “The outer story of the 1872-dated novel is woven from the adventurous life of a man living in Komárom, according to local traditions, but we can confidently state that the inner world of the enchanting Noémi and Timár Mihály on Nobody’s Island originates elsewhere. This may be his only novel directly nourished by Jókai’s living emotions rather than purely by his imagination.” Shortly after its release, Jókai himself wrote its stage adaptation, which, from 1885 onwards, remained part of the repertoire of the Oradea stage for decades.
After nearly 70 years, the Szigligeti Company is now reviving this work on the 100th anniversary of the great storyteller’s death.
