Lovers of Ancona

Based on Italian Renaissance comedies, written by Katalin Vajda from an idea by Péter Valló

with lyrics by Péter Fábri

musical comedy with Italian hits

The setting is a small town on the Adriatic coast in the sixties and seventies, where Don Tomao lives, a father raising his child alone, but very fond of the pleasures of love, with his light-hearted maid, a lonely boarding house owner next door and Giovanni, a café owner with a slightly more than mediocre passion for hospitality. Giovanni wants to marry Tomao Nicomaco's slightly speech-impaired daughter, so he can use the dowry to open an authentic restaurant. However, the girl falls in love with a disadvantaged travelling musician, and her father arranges for her to marry a wealthy suitor. On top of all this, a Hungarian girl arrives at the guesthouse next door, bearing the fruits of the weeks she spent with Giovanni in Debrecen. Giovanni is keen to keep the affair from his future father-in-law, Don Tomao, who begins to court the Hungarian girl like a mature amoroso.

The audience will not be short of love and hits, as the great Italian songs of the time are sung, including "Ciao Bambina," "A Tear on the Face," "Volare," "Twenty-Four Thousand Kisses," "Felicita," and "L'Italiano."
