Acclaimed Director József Szabó ”Ódzsa” Dies

Acclaimed director, eternal member of Szigligeti Company and winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award József Szabó ”Ódzsa” has passed away at the age of 91. 

He graduated the Hungarian Institute of Arts Cluj-Napoca in 1953, continuing his studies for another year at the Moscow School of Theatre as a stage director. Returning home, he directed in the theatres of Satu Mare and Baia Mare, and collaborating, from August 1957, with the Hungarian State Theatre of Cluj-Napoca for over a year. In 1969, he came to Oradea as a principal director, returning often to Cluj. In 1985, he emigrated to Hungary, working, until his retirement, for Kisfaludy Theatre in Győr, and later for Petőfi Theatre in Veszprém. He is best known for staging acclaimed classic and contemporary Hungarian dramas in various forms. His key feature was psychologically precise character portrayal.
