Molière
The Learned Ladies
comedy
Translated by::
A good, sensible young Parisian man, Clitandre, wants to marry Henriette, the younger daughter of Chrysale, a wealthy bourgeois. Not long ago, he was in love with the older sister, Armande, but her insufferable pretentiousness drove him away… and so on. In The Learned Ladies, Molière (1622–1673), the sharpest-tongued, greatest humorist of universal drama literature, rewrites the theme he first treated in The Affected Ladies as a farce, this time following the rules of classical comedy. He makes fun of those who are overly enthusiastic about their love of learning. The play’s original premiere in 1672 (with Molière himself playing Chrysale) did not meet with success, as quite a few Parisian "learned ladies" were in the audience and did not enjoy seeing themselves ridiculed. Interestingly—or not—it is notable that exactly a hundred years ago, in 1906, was the first and only occasion when the play was performed at the Szigligeti Theatre.
