We, Men
A Musical Comedy in Three Acts
Translated by::
The Méhes comedy, which was a great success in 1971, again returns as a musical version, now enriched with compositions by Lajos Boross alongside Júlia Majláth’s original pieces. This lighthearted, cloudless summer entertainment serves as the season finale. From the original cast, only Barna Borsos remains, while all other roles have been recast. A noteworthy change is that in the 1971 production, Ildikó Kiss Törék was double-cast with Ibolya V. Csíky for the role of the young Ági, which she performed nearly a hundred times after the play’s premiere in Timișoara on the countless tours of the Bega-parti theatre. However, due to scheduling conflicts, she never played the role in Oradea. Now, she returns to the production in the role of Anna, the mother.
The plot of We, Men is rooted in real-life situations. It portrays the sacrifices of a mother who holds the family together, often at the cost of her own aspirations. Meanwhile, her husband—especially if he is an artist—seeks to escape the daily struggles and soar into a more idealized world, despite the importance of those struggles. It is no surprise that young women fall in love with famous actors and do whatever it takes to win them over. However,the Deus Ex Machine-like miracle with Mum is difficult to incorporate into our everyday practices. It happened despite the counterbalancing intentions of the director (Kati Gábor) and the excellent acting, which adds a little false note to the performance. So that's life, only more ridiculous in comedy..." (István Stanik, Fáklya)
Another György Méhes premiere, this time a musical version of the comedy We Men (which premiered in Timisoara in 1968).
Mum is an ordinary woman, whose everyday life consists of family, children, housework and work, alongside her famous husband. But one day she too will become famous and move to the capital. In the meantime, her husband is seduced by a young fan of hypocritical modesty, and her children too, but one day it turns out that Mum is sorely missed and can never be replaced. And Mum returns home, rejuvenated and reinvigorated, and everything falls into place.
As György Méhes wrote in the program booklet:
"The real question is not whether a play belongs to a ‘serious’ or ‘light’ genre, but rather what it expresses and how it resonates with the audience."
