Háy János
Mandrake
Translated by::
In János Háy's vision The Mandrake, Machiavelli's black comedy written 500 years ago, is reborn in the dust, whiskey vapours, and violence of the Wild, Wild West.
Callimaco, the eternal wanderer and lover of the metropolis, and his friend Siro return to his birthplace, a small town forgotten by the world the boom of a revolver signals the noon hour. He sets out to conquer the Moonlight, a beautiful, young—and unfortunately newly married—woman named Lucretia. Although the path laid out by the perfidious Ligurio is dirty and treacherous, this love is so strong that it's worth all the detours and bullet rains.
It's a story told repeatedly with other names, other cities, and in other times. Since every desire is eternal and every deception seems familiar, we know that somewhere, someone is dreaming again and again of a woman who perhaps never existed.
