Tennessee Williams
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
drama
Translated by:: Zsótér Sándor, Ambrus Mária
The play that inspired Elizabeth Taylor’s legendary film unfolds over the course of a single evening.
A sultry summer night in the Pollitt family’s luxurious home — when emotions, desires, and ambitions collide.
The family is preparing to celebrate Big Daddy’s sixty-fifth birthday. The presents remain wrapped, while instead, a suffocating family crisis begins to unravel at alarming speed. The father, who built his immense fortune from nothing, is now nearing the end of his career. But who will inherit his empire?
As the tension rises, a dark shadow emerges in the background — the specter of mortality. The illusion of wealth and family harmony begins to crumble. The allure of money, the torment of desire, and the weight of suppressed secrets all form part of that “tin roof” on which Maggie the Cat struggles to hold her ground. She fights for her marriage, for herself, for survival — within a family bound together only by shared crisis.
But what does victory mean for a cat? And what is the “tin roof” that we all cling to?
