István Zágon - Károly Nóti - Mihály Eisemann
Hippolyt, the Butler
musical comedy in 3 acts
Translated by::
A petty bourgeois milieu – not even upper middle class, but with aristocratic pretensions: an eternal comic theme. The trio of authors thoroughly exploit the potential of this setting, creating one of the most successful works in the most fashionable genre of interwar Hungarian stage literature. The musical comedy Hippolyt, the Butler by Zágon István, Nóti Károly, and Eisemann Mihály conquered both the stage and later the screen, and not just through its musical numbers that became evergreen hits (“Oh, how good is the creamy pastry”, “Tonight we’ll have a good time”, “On a moonlit night”, “Thank you for loving me”, etc.). It provided – and still provides! – Great opportunities for the great comedians of the Hungarian stage to entertain their beloved audiences.
Perhaps that’s why it seems unbelievable – yet it’s true – that Hippolyt is now being staged for the first time in our theatre.
