A play about language in two acts
Translated by::
The English-Irish conflict has a long history, with roots dating back to the Middle Ages when the colonisation of the island by the English began. (A new chapter in this story has started in recent weeks with the announcement of the IRA's ceasefire.) Contemporary Irish playwright Brian Friel also delved into the more distant past when he sought to portray one of the lesser-known aspects of this conflict: in the 18th century came the moment when the occupying English aimed to "colonize" (in other words: Anglicize) one of the most intimate spheres of the Irish language (and of any language!): place names. How, and with what success? This is the subject of Translations, a (genre-wise) tragicomedy.
