Janusz Glowacki
Antigone in New York
tragicomedy in two parts
Translated by:: Judit Kálmán
Janusz Glowacki (1938, Poznan) – playwright, short story writer, and screenwriter.
He first gained attention as a short story writer, documenting the realities of 1960s and ’70s Poland with relentless sarcasm. In the early 1970s, he began working as a screenwriter and wrote his first plays during this period. After the introduction of martial law, he left his homeland and settled in the United States. His greatest theatrical success came with Antigone in New York, which achieved acclaim both in Poland and in the United States. Since the 1990s, he has frequently returned to his native country.
Glowacki’s plays are rooted in the realistic theatrical tradition, rare in Poland, most often satirising the petty-bourgeois, suburban lifestyle – his social sensitivity and ironic-grotesque style placing him among the greats of Polish drama.
