Georges Feydeau

The Fool

Farce

Translated by:: Kornél Hamvai

Everyone appears to create a fast-paced, hilarious, boisterous performance based on Feydeau's (1862-1921) burlesque, previously translated as The Dupe: the determined seductress, the voluptuous wife, the clumsy lover, the woman locked in the bathroom, the deluded husband and, of course, a series of comical scenes and coincidences. The comedies of perhaps the most famous French representative of the farce genre were exceptionally popular during the author's lifetime, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and remain so to this day. With its masterful structure and unique, ironic humour, the play anticipates the absurd drama that would emerge much later. We owe the fresh, joke-filled, linguistically inventive performance text not least to Hamvai Kornél's excellent translation.
