Szigligeti Company is Preparing an Absurd Comedy

Rehearsals have begun for Szigligeti Company’s upcoming big stage premiere, staging Nikolaj Erdmans’ absurdist comedy, The Suicide, directed by Bálint Botos.

The protagonist of the play is the Szemjon Podszekalnyikov, a petulant, jobless bourgeois with a good appetite.    He decides to eat liverwurst one night, but in the course of a heated argument with his wife, he gets so offended that he makes a fatal decision. This insignificant situation sets a mad race in motion, where the intellectuals, the clergy and the artist parade before us, so that the author can distort them to show a picture of human pettiness.

“Erdman’s play is alarmingly entertaining. It speaks in a grotesque tounge, with plenty of humour that pushes the boundaries of the absurd, talking about the disappointments and desires experienced by individuals and society during the regime changes" – said Bálint Botos about the upcoming performance. However, the director added: “It’s an exciting experience to be working with Szigligeti Company for the fourth time. On one hand, there are a lot of happy reunions, and on the other, there is also a lot of getting to know each other, as I get to work with some of the cast for the first time".

If all goes accordingly, the Szigligeti Company’s performance of The Suicide will debut at the end of March on the main stage of the Szigliget Theatre in Oradea.
