Mircea Bradu passed away

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that our theater’s longest serving director, Mr. Mircea Bradu, passed away at the age of 84. His name remains etched deeply on the list of the shapers and nurturers of Bihor culture.

Born to a family of teachers in the village of Lăzăreni, he absorbed the air of high culture as a child. This was seen from his novels (out of which many have been translated to different languages) and stage plays, which have been continuously presented by our theatre’s Romanian company. The success of these plays, among others, led to his appointment as director in 1977. He came from the literary field to theatre, and became a man of the theatre to the core.

He did his job with faith, enthusiasm and dedication. He was awarded numerous festival prizes, while also bringing amazing stage directors to the city. He managed to bring our theatre abroad, which was not an easy thing to do at the time. He maintained a close relationship with the Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen.

He paid great attention to the operation and development of our theatre’s Hungarian company. He was proud of our performances, which he attended multiple times. He participated in all cultural events in the city, most of them organised by him. The theatre, literature and folk culture were all close to his heart and he treated his employees with love. Anyone could turn to him whenever, with whatever questions they had. He helped young actors with anything they needed, from career advice to housing problems. It’s not suprising that in the euphoria of the regime change, the people chose him as mayor. The heightened emotions and revolutionary fervour took a toll on his health, so he was not able to continue in this career for long. He still didn’t leave the theatre behind for two more years. It was good working with him. He knew everything about theatre.

He was full of ideas to change the world of theatre, and it wasn't his fault that he couldn't realise many of them. Surely, even after death, he is proud that his daughters – Anca, Lioara and Raluca – all found their place in the cultural field. Out of them, Anca is the director of many ambitious plays to this day.

With his death, Szigligeti Theater lost a good friend. We cherish his memory with love for the attitude and help he gave us. Blessed be his memory. We wish comfort to his loved ones.
