Parasztopera: a Cult Classic in Oradea

Between July 3-6., 2021, Szigligeti Theatre organises the ninth edition of HolnapUtán Festival. The aim of the international festival is to introduce the audience of Oradea to the outstanding Hungarian-language theatre workshops of the region. The backbone of this year’s programme will be comprised of performances that build on the natural interweaving of theatre and music.

On Sunday 6 June at 19:00, on the fourth day of HolnapUtán Festival, the audience will be able to see the play Paraszt Opera, a co-production of Novi Sad Theatre and the National Theatre of Szeged. The play is based on an archaic story, in which the classical elements of incest, murder and hidden succession are mixed with the specific motifs of Hungarian folk ballads. The musical basis of the performance, which functions both as an opera and as a stylistic parody of it, is formed by Transylvanian Hungarian folk songs, while at the same time baroque and rock music elements can also be discovered in the musical fabric of the production directed by Attila Keresztes.

Tickets for the performance are now for sale at Szigligeti Theatre’s box office, or at szigligeti.biletmaster.ro. At the same time, discounted season tickets are also available for the four performances of the HolnapUtán Festival.

Organizers would like to remind the audience that the performances of Szigligeti Theatre can be attended without a vaccination certificate, with appropriate social distancing and masks.
