It is essential that we bury the dead. It is unquestionable. Bu what do we do with an absurd decision that forbids us to bury the deceased? What happens when those in power decide that they have suddenly become gods? That their command is greater than the laws of nature and ethics? Antigone's answer is clear: legal or not, the dead must be buried. Even if the powers that be will punish this deed with death.
For Antigone, the burial of her brother is the natural obedience to the laws of the gods, the execution of her duties that come from love. For Creon, the forbidding of this means nothing more than a  demonstration of force. What he doesn't expect though is that the gods will avenge the offence, and demand sacrifice. By the time he could change his mind, his wife and son have become victims of his own obstinacy. His demise is unavoidable, and even necessary, becase it's the only way to reestablish the world order that once was.
Almost 2500 years have passed since this play was written. But the conflict between morals and power is as timely as ever, and to face it is a challenge for director and viewer alike.
Duration of the play is 115 minutes without intermission.
